How long have I been writing? I’ve been writing since grade school. I entered a contest when I was nine years old for the Barbie doll. The theme of the contest was “What Barbie means to me” I came in as a runner up and received a gold bracelet with a Barbie charm on it. I still have it some where. I took journalism in high school and wrote articles for the school newspaper. I didn’t write as much until later when I got interested in writing books for children and took a course in that. Later, I began writing my own romantic fiction and have been working on it since 1995. I joined RWA in 1997 and CPRW the same year.
What do you write? I write historical romantic fiction set in the mid 1850 to Civil War time period. It is regional to the southern Pennsylvania area I grew up in.
Why do you write it? I had an idea for a couple based on things my parents told me about their courtship that was a springboard to my historical novel. Also, as I wrote it, I thought it reminded me of things I had gone through in my life but set in an historical time frame. I love to read historical novels and I feel that my writing fits that period best.
Do you write listening to music? What kind? I have written this novel mostly to music. My hero is Irish and my heroine is Pennsylvania German, so I was listening to Irish instrumental music. I tend to listen to instrumental music when I write as if it has words, I tend to sing along and thus don’t write well. I was also working on another novel with a Spanish hero and I listened to a lot of Spanish guitar music to get in the mood. It helped. The music must get me in the mind set of what I am working on.
Which authors have influenced you most? I have had many authors who have inspired me from Phyllis Whitney, Nora Roberts, Charlotte Bronte, Margaret Mitchell, Susan Wiggs, Mitch Albom, Karen Rose Smith, and many others. I love authors who can make history come alive and make it feel as if you were present, like when Jim Bishop wrote “The Day Lincoln Was Shot” I read that several times in high school. I’ve read “Gone With The Wind” at least four times, I love Margaret Mitchell’s descriptive passages.

Unraveling mysteries form Decca Price’s earliest memories, whether she was exploring her grandmother’s cupboards on a rainy Saturday afternoon or the darkest corners of the local library after school.  The Nancy Drew book her great-aunt sent all the way from California one Christmas (“The Mystery of the Old Clock”) put her on a track that led to Agatha Christie paperbacks happily shared with her mother, along with the copy of “Jane Eyre” she devoured the summer she was 12, “Wuthering Heights,” “Green Mansions,” all of the Judy Bolton books and everything she could find by Daphne du Maurier, Victoria Holt, Mary Stewart, Helen McInnes and Thomas B. Costain.

Her interests in literature, history and romance led to college degrees in education and English literature and a lasting love for the Victorian novel — particularly Dickens, Trollope and Collins, who knew mystery lies at the heart of every great romance.

A published writer – from poetry and reflective essays in the college literary magazine to award-winning journalism – Price lives in Central Pennsylvania with two cats and too many books to count. When she is not reading, she likes to garden, entertain, travel — and write.

Favorite ride at an amusement park.  Not sure what it’s called, but the floor drops from under your feet and you’re flattened against the wall. Bumper cars too, but that was a long time ago.
What do you write?  I write historicals and time travels with fantasy and paranormal elements.
Favorite color.  Green. Darker shades of green.
Do you write while listening to music?  What kind?  Yes. Depends on what I’m working on. When I write about Wood Nymphs, or women with special gifts, then it’s The Medieval Babes. I’ve also used the music from The Shipping News and other movie scores. Celtic.
Best advice ever given.  Send your internal editor out of the room when you write.

Beth started her writing career creating personal computer application user manuals and cost justifications for computer equipment.  When she realized that cost justifications for senior management were almost pure fiction, her creative writing career was born.  Beth has been published in Affaire de Coeur magazine and currently writes romantic adventure with a splash of comedy (to keep things real).  Beth lives in Mechanicsburg, PA with her husband of 26 years and is hard at work writing her next novel.

What’s your favorite ride at the amusement park? The biggest, scariest roller coaster they have.

How long have you been writing romance? Since 2004.

If you could go anywhere in the whole world, in any time period, where would it be and why? That’s a toss-up between Arthurian Age Britain and serving on the Enterprise with Captain Kirk. I am so fascinated by both eras, I probably lived (or will live) in both.

What’s your favorite fairy tale? Harry Potter
